| Southland Park takes great pride in being a good neighbor in West Memphis and Crittenden County, Arkansas. With over 300 associates, Southland is one of the largest employers in the county. The track also contracts with approximately twenty kennel owners to race their greyhounds with us each year. These kennels hire trainers, helpers and others, which also adds to the economic base of Crittenden County.
Since 1990, Southland Park has contributed more than $14.3 million to public agencies and private, non-profit organizations from uncashed tickets, breakage and "Charity Days" of racing. Thirty-three (33) days each calendar year are designated "Charity Days" at Southland Park. These proceeds are disbursed to community, charitable and other programs as dictated by state legislation.
Southland Park has a close working relationship with the local two year college located here in West Memphis (Mid-South Community College). In 2001, Southland Park made a one million dollar ($1,000,000) to the college and is honored to have their science building named the "Southland Park Science Center". Lead-outs working in the Racing Department at Southland are eligible for tuition scholarships based upon their working hours at the track. Many other employees also take advantage of continuing education classes that are paid for by Southland.
In addition to monetarily supporting a number of charities locally in West Memphis, Southland Park is proud to be a sponsor of such events as West Memphis Freedom Fest, Lions Club 'Livin' on the Levee' Rodeo, Esperanza Bonanza and many other functions.
Our associates take a very active part in the community. A number of our associates serve on the Board of Directors of such organizations as West Memphis Chamber of Commerce, Good Neighbor Center/Delta Service Corps, West Memphis Advertising and Promotions Commission, West Memphis Rotary, West Memphis March of Dimes and Southland 5k. Other associates participate in the local "Partners in Education" program in which local businesses adopt a school to help them fulfill their educational needs.
